Today is a very good day for America, and for the rest of the world, too. The Democrats won back both the House and the Senate. There’s still a great deal to do, of course, but this is a big step in the right direction. And today I feel more hopeful than I have in a long time.

I hope Ukraine will get more of the support it needs to defend its own land, and that Europe and the rest of the world will help Ukrainians rebuild their cities. I hope Ukraine can join the European Union and perhaps one day NATO, so that Ukrainians can finally live in peace.

I hope we’ll see less of the ugly face of authoritarianism on our screens. And I hope Congress will get serious about regulating AI. It has enormous potential, and I’d like to see us put it to work for the public good.

I’m grateful to everyone who gave their time and lent their voice.

To Barack Obama, Jane Fonda, Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. To Robert De Niro, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, Bette Midler, Alec Baldwin, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kerry Washington and Lupita Nyong’o.

To Heather Cox Richardson, whose voice of reason carried through all the noise, and to Timothy Snyder for his pre-election conversations.

A special thank-you to the indefatigable Bernie Sanders. And thank you to Bruce Springsteen, Susan Sarandon, Adam Brody, Annette Bening, Sally Field and all the others who spoke up.

This is beginning to sound like an Academy Awards acceptance speech. I hope I’ve finished before the orchestra starts playing. But truly, thank you.

Between the Lines moves between the political and the personal, the historical and the immediate—food, art, travel, and the long view. If that sounds wide, it is. The world is wide.
